The Captain's Kangaroo Island Tour

On departure from Aldinga Airfield, the flight begins by tracking south along the western coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula. The flight is a magnificent viewing platform for the rugged ginger and cream rolling cliffs.

Now on track to Cape Jervis where the ferry sails from the terminal to Kangaroo Island, the flight goes by the Starfish Hill Wind Farm which rises to a height of 306 metres above sea level, with 23 wind turbines rising up to 68 metres each across two hills.

Climbing up over Cape Jervis, the course is set for a track across Backstairs Passage to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island, an island seven times the size of Singapore. The beach at Penneshaw is known as Hog Bay with its own colony of Fairy Penguins.

On to Kingscote which is situated on the shores of beautiful Nepean Bay and the commercial and business hub of the island. To the north there are steep cliffs that descend steeply to Reeves Point (old Kingscote), the site of the first official South Australian Settlement in the Colony-27th July, 1836.

Heading inland, the flight goes on to Parndana, the 'Place of Little Gums', a typical Australian country town. Heading south to Vivonne Bay and proclaimed the 'best beach' in Australia, this beach is long, curved and sandy, a superb site for picnics, beachcombing, surfing and fishing.

Flying eastwards to Seal Bay Conservation Park we fly by Seal Bay where  Australian sea lions rest and nurse their young. Then on to 'Little Sahara', which is an area of spectacular, vivid white sand dunes and natural bush vegetation. Now the flight tracks across The Lagoons in the Conservation Park, a birdlife paradise.

The flight heads out across the eastern coast of Kangaroo Island and over The Deep Creek Conservation Park, up over the hills that surround the McLaren Vale wine region and into Aldinga Airfield near Sellicks Beach.

The Navigator's Environmental Tour

The Navigator's Environmental Tour

On departure from Aldinga Airfield, the flight tracks up over the Willunga Hills, across The Myponga Reservoir and on to Victor Harbor and Goolwa, the first officially proclaimed port on The Murray River. You may be lucky to catch a glimpse of the Southern Right Whales in this area between the months of May to October. The whales come to mate and give birth as their newborn calves cannot survive the freezing Antarctic waters.

From Goolwa and The Murray Mouth, the flight is above the rolling breakers and shell strewn beaches of The Coorong. The 50,000 hectare Coorong National Park conserves a distinctive and beautiful landscape, coastal dune system, lagoons, wetlands and coastal vegetation. It is also an archaeological site with middens and burial sites giving evidence of Aboriginal occupation over many thousands of years.

Heading inland and tracking over Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert, continuing up river to Wellington where the car ferry travels across the river at the widest crossing of the Murray, the flight continues over the myriad of channels flowing into the Murray and Finniss River.

Flying across the hills and back over the very different landscape of textured vineyards at the foot of the hills and bounded by the sea, it is a simply beautiful natural landscape!

The Fleurieu Hills, Sea and Vines Tour

The Fleurieu Hills, Sea and Vines Tour

Heading south along the coast from Aldinga Airfield in the McLaren Vale wine region, the flight tracks along the cliffs towards Cape Jervis on the southern end of the Fleurieu Peninsula.  At this point there is an extensive view to Kangaroo Island across the waters of Backstairs Passage.

Now tracking northeast, over the hills and Myponga Reservoir, on towards Strathalbyn, a country town with a collection of antique shops and heritage listed buildings. From Strathalbyn, we fly  north following the gum studded ridges and gullies of the Adelaide Hills, by Mt Bold Reservoir and over the historic towns of Mt Barker, Nairne, Hahndorf, Bridgewater and Balhannah.

Heading south and on the outskirts of Adelaide, the Onkaparinga Hills is part of Kaurna country, where there are many sites of great significance to the Kaurna Aboriginal people.

The Onkaparinga River meets the sea at Port Noarlunga and low tides expose a nearby heritage listed reef that provides a unique natural marine reserve. The river that once provided an early trade route for locally milled flour to ships waiting at Port Noarlunga,  is now a part of the Onkaparinga River Wetlands Trail, with boardwalk access to the estuary wetlands where birdwatchers may see egrets, ibis, yellow billed spoonbills, coots and herons.

Continuing south, the flight takes in McLaren Vale and the wine region renowned for stunning and award winning red wines.  The stunning coastline of white sandy beaches with ginger and cream cliffs make beautiful photographic opportunities, the flight follows the coast by Maslin Beach, the first nudist beach in Australia, then around Gull Rock, a small sandstone island which is noted for  the  cormorant colony that roosts there, and banking with the line of the cliffs along Pt Willunga Beach where at low tide the Star of Greece shipwreck is easily visible from the air.

Curving around Snapper Point and Silver Sands, the flight heads back into the circuit over the vineyards for Aldinga Airfield.
