The Navigator’s Environmental Tour
On departure from Aldinga Airfield, the flight tracks up over the Willunga Hills, across The Myponga Reservoir and on to Victor Harbor and Goolwa, the first officially proclaimed port on The Murray River. You may be lucky to catch a glimpse of the Southern Right Whales in this area between the months of May to October. The whales come to mate and give birth as their newborn calves cannot survive the freezing Antarctic waters.
From Goolwa and The Murray Mouth, the flight is above the rolling breakers and shell strewn beaches of The Coorong. The 50,000 hectare Coorong National Park conserves a distinctive and beautiful landscape, coastal dune system, lagoons, wetlands and coastal vegetation. It is also an archaeological site with middens and burial sites giving evidence of Aboriginal occupation over many thousands of years.
Heading inland and tracking over Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert, continuing up river to Wellington where the car ferry travels across the river at the widest crossing of the Murray, the flight continues over the myriad of channels flowing into the Murray and Finniss River.
Flying across the hills and back over the very different landscape of textured vineyards at the foot of the hills and bounded by the sea, it is a simply beautiful natural landscape!
